About National Gallery London

The grand building of the National Gallery dominates Trafalgar Square, London. It was built to a design by William Wilkins and was constructed between 1834 and 1837.

The National Gallery contains Europe's finest collection of paintings, it is particularly rich in Italian works of art from the 15th and 16th centuries, and of the British school. The collection is vast, it spans paintings from 1200 to virtually the 20th century, not all paintings are on display, some are kept in store to be brought out for special exhibitions.

Each month the gallery features a "painting of the month" and there are regular changing exhibitions featuring the work of a particular artist, or the works of a famous collection.

Visitors can take advantage of audio tours, these include the recommendations of the National Gallery Director and an Art in the Making tour.

A trip to the National Gallery is a richly rewarding experience. The pictures belong to the public, thus there is no admission charge.
